Patrick McCord, PhD: The Professor

Patrick is the Write Yourself Free workshop leader.

Patrick is a fugitive from Hollywood where he learned that his talents were more analytical than presentational. Putting his talents to work more constructively, he earned a PhD in Narratology (English) at the University of Georgia. As a college professor, he has specialized in story- and identity-cognition in film and literature Patrick was honored to win the prestigious Mitchell Marcus Award in 1991. Tish Fried: Director

Is the founder and President of The Editing Company and has lived in Westport for 19 years. Her collaborations have ranged from memoir to self-help to dramaturgy. As Director, Tish is dedicated to supporting writers with new and unique services like The Writers’ Room. “It has been a blast watching the writers get better and better. Whether our writers are working on novels or non-fiction, listening to them tell stories and read at our Writers’ Read events is always exciting. The best stories are rooted in a personal sense of truth, and discovering that unique truth—whether it’s a based on a real experience or lives only in the imagination—shouldn’t be labor, but play.” She is now working on launching the publishing arm of The Editing Company and continues to build the writers’ collective.

Jenny Cox:  Editorial Consultant

Jenny Cox is an editorial consultant and award-winning writer with more than 20 years of experience as a book editor. She began her publishing career at the Georges Borchardt, Inc. literary agency, and then moved to Simon & Schuster, where she was a senior editor specializing in both trade fiction and non-fiction. After Simon & Schuster, Jenny Cox helped launch Disney’s publishing arm, Hyperion Books, where she was named the company’s first Senior Editor.

While at Simon & Schuster, Cox worked with many bestselling authors, including Kate Millett (Sexual Politics), former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, Arianna Huffington, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld and many other celebrities. At Hyperion Books she acquired and edited both fiction and non-fiction, including a novel by National Book Critics Circle Award winner Stanley Elkin (Van Gogh’s Room at Arles) and the award-winning biography of Thomas Edison by Dr. Neil Baldwin (Inventing the Century). Cox prides herself on being a sensitive and skillful line editor, who works closely with authors. After she edited Kate Millett’s memoir, Millett wrote: “This wasn’t an easy book to do: eight years went into writing and rewriting it. It wouldn’t have seen the light of day without my editor, Jenny Cox, who believed in it, took the vast pile of manuscript, reduced it by half, and gave it what strength and coherence it has.”

Jenny Cox graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a B.A. in the History and Literature of England and America. She has four children and lives in Connecticut.

De Boone, WYF Social Networking Expert

De Boone has communication skills deeply planted in her DNA coming from a long line of educators and preachers and is a writer, radio show host (The Abundance with De Boone Empowerment Show) and motivational speaker. In her former corporate life, De was a Senior Analyst for Gartner Inc., the world’s leading technology research and advisory firm where, among an array of assignments, she was charged with the responsibility for creating a Corporate University serving over 5000 employees worldwide. De established numerous training programs and served as training liaison between the IT department and business departments to creating software and internet/intranet training applications.She launched her own consulting firm, De Boone Consulting where she coaches people overcome their fear of public speaking and provides marketing solutions for entrepreneurs, small business owners and writers who struggle with self-promotions and branding.

Corinne Trang: Cookbooks

After 22 years in New York City, writing six cookbooks, consulting with top restaurants and teaching at New York University, Asian Food Expert, Corinne Trang has moved to Westport. The Washington Post writes: “She’s the Julia Child of Asian Cuisine.” Her cookbooks have won numerous awards and Trang received Food & Wine’s Best of the Best Award, as well as The World Cookbook Fair’s Best Asian Cuisine Book in the World. Currently she is consulting with The Dressing Room and will be teaching food writing workshops with us starting in the new year. Her books include: Authentic Vietnamese Cooking (1999), Essentials of Asian Cuisine (2003), The Asian Grill (2006, Curry Cuisine (2006), A Food Lover’s Companion: Vietnamese (2007), Noodles Every Day (2009).

Victoria Sherrow: Children’s Writing

Victoria Sherrow is the author of 12 picture books, including two from Harper. Her Chipmunk at Hollow Tree Lane (Soundprints) won a Parent’s Choice Gold Award and Vermont Reading Circle Award and was a Scholastic book club selection. Twenty-six of Victoria’s books are listed in Best Books for Children, Preschool Through Grade 6 an Young Adult (2005). She has taught at The Institute of Children’s Literature since 1991.Victoria  will draw upon her experience as the author of more than 80 published books and numerous short stories for children and teens, all sold without an agent. Victoria has also been an editorial assistant and contest judge, reviewed children’s books, and taught writing since 1993.

Annette Basalyga: Poetry

Annette Basalyga new book of poetry, LIFER, was published Fall, 2010 Her poems have been published in numerous journals and periodicals including Atlanta Review, Audience, Beloit Poetry Journal, Columbia: a Journal of Literature and Art, Commonweal, Compass Review, Comstock Review, Connotations, December Gargoyle, The Hollins Critic, Iconoclast, The New Orleans Poetry Review, Poetry Midwest, The Smith, Spoon River Poetry Review, Verbatim, Valparaiso Review and Windhover, and anthologized in The Borestone Mountain Poetry Awards The Denny Poems, The Palpable Clock, The Pater Yearbook of American Poetry, Arvon’s International Poetry Competition, and last fall, in Poem, Home; An Anthology of Ars Poetica. She lives in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
